Advocacy
One of MOBILE's
primary roles in creating a fully accessible community is advocacy.
MOBILE's Advocacy Network is comprised of 200 individuals who work together
on advocacy issues. Strong networking keeps MOBILE staff and members
in touch while participating in local, state and national issues.
Peer Support
MOBILE's Peer Support
Network provides an organized system of help, resources and advice by
and for people with disabilities. Individuals needing assistance in
overcoming barriers to independent living, obtaining services, as well
as undertaking routine tasks are matched with individuals with common
interests and/or experience.
In addition to providing
a network of people with disabilities, various activities are hosted
through the year to develop a community of people with disabilities.
Independent Living
Attaining independence
is the first step to becoming your own best advocate. Independent Living
seminars cover topics such as advocacy, financial management, self esteem
improvement, explanation of federal laws and communication skills.
Information and
Referral
MOBILE maintains
an extensive reference and video library intended to assist consumers
in topic-bases research. A nationwide computer network and database
ensures consumers have ready access to the latest disability-awareness
information.
Home Modification
Local funds are
used to remove structural barriers in the homes of people with disabilities
allowing them to function more independently. Some modifications the
program provides includes wood ramps, widening sidewalks and interior/exterior
doors, wheelchair and stair lifts, roll-in showers, grab bars, raised
toilets, accessible sinks and faucets, hand held showers and shower
chairs.
Deaf Equipment
Deaf Equipment Program
provides equipment to assist people who are deaf to ensure their safety
and independence. The equipment is purchased through use of local
funds similar to the Home Modification Program.
