THERE IS NO EMERGENCY HOUSING IN COLUMBUS!

Even for people with disabilities. The only option is the shelters. If you are willing to go to a shelter, call First Link at (221-2255). Have them find an available shelter for you.

If you have cash on hand or income the YMCA or YWCA of Columbus, both have accessible units.

YMCA (224-1131)

  • units require a 30 day lease and rent amount is based on income.

YWCA (224-9121)

  • units require a 6 months lease and a $100 deposit
  • Rent $210 monthly, qualifying income for one person can not exceed $21,240 annually.

Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) - 421-4477 offers:

  • Low Rent Program - rental program for housing owned by CMHA.
  • Home Ownership Program-assist eligible families to purchase CMHA owned property. Eligibility is based on income, family size, and a minimum of one year employment.
  • Section 8 - rental assistance for low income individuals/families.
  • Family pays 30% adjusted income for rent/utilities.

Eviction - if you are about to be evicted contact Columbus Urban League (257-6300), they may be able to assist you with tenant/landlord mediation and other services.

HomeSharing is an organization that matches people to be house mates. One of the 2 people must be a senior citizen or have a disability. It is a very good program for those who do not mind sharing their living quarters. The trade off is a break in rent in exchange for some personal assistance services. The Epcon Group builds accessible condominiums @ $118,000-$179,900. Call 761-1010 for more information.

There is a newly renovated 1 bedroom condo overlooking a park, fully accessible with roll-in shower. Located n the colony Hill subdivision off Hague Road. $550/month, includes utilities, local phone, and all appliances. Call Mr. Bachman at 1-888-711-4545.

Creative Housing - Accessible housing/apartments funded through Franklin County Board of MRDD. They are located through out Franklin County.

  • Eligibility requires that you qualify for services thru MRDD.
  • Contact Franklin County Board of MRDD Case Management (464-2743).

Creative Living - Accessible apartments for people who have significant physical disability. They offer a 24 hour support staff for emergencies.

  • You must be employed or in school to qualify.
  • Rent is based on income.
  • You must have your own attendant services
  • There are two complexes in the OSU area.

For persons looking for housing outside Franklin County, we suggest that you call a number of organizations in that community and try to get leads.

  • Local hospital social work departments.
  • Local Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation.
  • Local County Department of Welfare (Human Services).
  • Local Community Action Organizations.

We do not know of any assistance to help someone actually look for an apartment or to move.
